RPTIA Forming Panel to Update ANSI Standard
The Newnan, Ga.-based Recreational Park Trailer Industry Association (RPTIA) is asking for volunteers to serve as members of an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Canvass Committee that will revise and update the national construction and safety standard for recreational park trailers, identified as ANSI A119.5.
This nationally recognized safety standard was last certified by ANSI on April 14, 2005, and was placed into service as a manufacturer requirement in November 2005. This standard covers the requirements of product safety exclusively and does not address items such as quality and durability.
“We hope to have the committee in place this summer so we can begin the process of updating the standard this fall,” said Bill Garpow, RPTIA’s executive director.
“Volunteers can be representatives of government agencies, insurance companies, financial companies, manufacturers, dealers, campground or RV resorts, third party engineering firms as well as interested consumers. The volunteers can be anyone who has a demonstrated interest in the standard and what it will be in the next edition.”
Once the Canvass Committee is assembled, ANSI then reviews the qualifications of each proposed committee member. The committee must be structured such that no specific classification, such as manufacturer or dealer, is over-represented and thus able to control the committee’s work.
Upon ANSI acceptance of Canvass membership, the committee begins its work changing the 2005 version of the standard to reflect the latest construction standards for plumbing, electrical, heating, fire and life safety and construction. It’s all part of an updating process that occurs every three or four years.
Persons interested in serving on the committee should contact Garpow at (770) 251-2672.
