The Alberta provincial government has taken the rare step of closing 17 campgrounds in the southwestern corner of the province, out of the fear of wildfires, according to AM 770, CHQR, Calgary.
The fire hazard in Alberta is listed as “extreme.”
A total of 104 other campgrounds in southern Alberta remain open, although they are under a fire ban. The closures come just as the August long weekend is about to start.
