The Aspen Skiing Co. (SkiCo) closed Tuesday (July 31) on the purchase of the Aspen Basalt Campground for $5.55 million from owners Rich and Bonnie Nichols, according to the Aspen Daily News.
SkiCo employees are now managing the campground and plan to operate it for the time being without making any substantial changes.
The campground property is located in west central Colorado, between El Jebel and Basalt. The campground was managed for years as a KOA franchise.
It is a 6.5-acre parcel that includes spaces for 70 trailers. About 45 of the sites are rented on a monthly basis for $650 a month; the nightly rate is $35.
SkiCo is beginning to review potential uses for the property, such as affordable housing, free-market housing, administration and office facilities for the company, and other potential uses.
