Wis. Campground Allowed to Expand

The Sawyer County, Wis., zoning committee last week approved a conditional use permit for a 40-site campground expansion to the Shady Nook Resort near Hayward, Wis., according to the Sawyer County Record.
Resort owner Thomas Sweeney, who has owned the northern Wisconsin resort for 46 years, said the expansion to him means keeping the resort afloat financially. Sweeney commented on the decline of family resorts in the area and said this expansion is necessary for his resort to survive. Conditions placed on the committee’s approval include stipulations limiting campers to four-week stays and that there be no RV camping, only amenities for transient campers.
Meanwhile, the request to allow development of a seasonal RV campground near Hayward was again tabled by the zoning committee due to absent applicant Ann Watt. The majority of the attendees at the Aug. 17 hearing were on hand to speak against the proposed campground and found themselves disgruntled when Watt did not show, according to the newspaper.
Last month, this agenda item was also tabled when Watt was a no-show.
As it stands, the issue will come before the zoning committee again in September when the committee will take action regardless of whether Watt attends the proceeding. Even though audience members requested their voices be heard at the meeting, Corporation Counsel Thomas Duffy urged the committee to table the issue, but that it be taken up again in September no matter what and requested those in objection return at that time to voice their opinions.
