Ohio Campground Owners Get Top KOA Award
Garry and Vicki Cole, owners of two Kampgrounds of America Inc. parks in Ohio, were named as recipients of KOA’s annual Franchisee of the Year Award for 2008 during last week’s KOA convention.
This year’s KOA meeting was part of a first-ever joint convention during which KOA’s corporate and franchise park personnel and members of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) shared the facilities of the Phoenix Convention Center for their annual national meetings.
One result of the conjoined Nov. 1-9 event was the largest outdoor hospitality expo on record showcasing a wide array of product and service suppliers to the RV park and campground arena. The expo, which ran Nov. 6-9, included a record number of recreational park trailers and was viewed as a real plus by most vendors that could display product to both organizations at one venue.
KOA drew representatives of about 200 parks to the convention, while ARVC’s registration numbers were still unavailable.
The Coles, five-year KOA franchisees who own both the Shelby/Mansfield and Butler/Mohican KOA campgrounds, were double winners last week during the joint convention, as they also were honored with ARVC’s Midsize Campground of the Year Award. Their family has owned and operated the Shelby/Mansfield park, founded by Garry Cole’s parents, for the past 40 years.
Cal and Roslyn Loewen, owners of the Cedar City, Utah, KOA, received KOA’s Rising Star Award, bestowed upon a relatively new KOA campground owner who has demonstrated dedication to the KOA campground system while running a successful new campground operation. The Loewens recently purchased a second park near Glamis, Cal., and are in the process of bringing that park into the KOA system. Cal Loewen is a longtime campground broker.
