A campground is one of the future uses Rob Tibbits is considering for Dixie, Iowa, a ghost town that he purchased for $35,000, according to The Associate Press.
The former town is about 10 miles east of Forest City, Iowa, headquarters of Winnebago Industries Inc. Tibbits lives on a nearby farm.
The town was founded in 1893 and once had a general store, tavern and a post office. Today there’s a burned-out house and a few machine sheds.
Tibbits says his purchase is one way of preserving local history.
But he’s not sure yet what he’s going to do with the town, which is only eight acres in size. Ideas ranging from holding consignment auctions to making it a private campground are on the table.
