Sturgis, S.D., Campground May Go ‘Dry’

The Meade County Commission has refused to renew the liquor license of a large campground that operates near Bear Butte in South Dakota during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
A county official said Jay Allen’s alcohol license was denied because of unpaid bills, which raises the issue of character, according to the Black Hills Pioneer, Spearfish, S.D.
However, Allen can reapply for a beer license next June for his Sturgis County Line campground. Allen lost his beer license last summer, also because of his debts.
American Indians and others opposed the initial approval of a liquor license last year to Allen because his campground and concert area are within three miles of Bear Butte, which is sacred to Indians.
