Louisiana/Mississippi Parks Attend Confab
Although the total numbers are small by many business measures, the 4th Annual Louisiana and Mississippi Campground Association Convention posted record attendance March 10-11 at the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Robert, La.
Forty-one people representing 18 campgrounds from the two states attended the convention, according to Sharon Vennen, executive director of the Louisiana Campground Owners Association (LCOA), which sponsored the event. Mississippi does not have an association but campgrounds from that state were invited to attend.
Seminar speakers and their topics were:
Seven companies participated in the vendor show.
Vennen said LCOA is tackling two legislative issues this year. The association will seek to have the starting date of school moved back so as to lengthen the camping season. School now starts between Aug. 10 and 13 throughout the state, she noted. LCOA also is seeking to have the Legislature raise the camping fees at Louisiana state parks so that they are more in line with private parks’ fees. Nightly camping fees are below $20 in many state parks, she said.
LCOA officers for 2008 were elected and they are: President Maurice LeBlanc Jr., Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, Robert, La.; Vice President LeAnne Everhardt, Land-O-Pines Family Campground, Covington, La.; and Secretary-Treasurer Kenny Scott, Pavilion RV Park, West Monroe, La.
The 2009 Louisiana and Mississippi Association Campground Convention will be the second week in March at a site yet to be determined.
