Alaska Owners Improving Communications

Communication with members and increasing participation were high on the minds of members of the Alaska Campground Owners Association (ACOA) attending the annual spring convention April 27-29 at the Hawthorn Suites & Inn in Anchorage.
The three-day convention attracted approximately a third of ACOA’s 69 member campgrounds, newly elected vice chairman Dwight Dietrich of Grand View Lodge & RV Park, Palmer, told Woodall’s Campground Management. He said the timing of the convention and the great distances some members must travel to attend may have held attendance down this year.
During the business meeting, the board agreed to set up a distribution list via e-mail so that when communication takes place between two or more board members, it would be sent to all board members. If a reply is made, it would be replied to all members of the board, according to board secretary Ronna Martin, Diamond M Ranch B & B, Cabins, RV Park, Kenai.
ACOA is scheduling two teleconferences for members this year. The first will be June 3; the second will be late August/early September.
The board also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of a rotating meeting to different areas of Alaska. It was also discussed to have a fall gathering for campground networking, sharing stories and taking tours of the area and reserving the spring convention for speakers and making connections with other industry associations and associate members.
During the convention a representative of Dish Network spoke to the ACOA members about satellite dish installations for Wi-Fi.
“That is the biggest obstacle with travelers,” said Dietrich. “They want Wi-Fi, especially in the rural areas. We’re trying to get Wi-Fi. The transition came so fast.”
New officers for the coming year are: Chairwoman Laura Saxe, Eagles Rest RV Park, Valdez; Vice Chairman Dietrich; Treasurer Graham Ward, Tolsona Wilderness Campground, Tolsona; Secretary Ronna Martin; and At-Large members Mike Jernigan, Tok RV Park, Tok; and Dee Starr, Mountain View RV Park, Palmer.
