The Sand Springs City Council by a one-vote margin on May 20 approved a specific use permit for a recreational vehicle park in south Sand Springs, Okla.
The council, on a 4-3 vote, upheld a May 6 commendation by the City Planning Commission to allow the 6.5-acre park, according to the Sand Springs Leader.
During two public hearings held by the planning commission, the property owner, Ray Tucker, said the site would have 68 lots for “upscale RVs.” Opponents worried the park would attract “families in transition” and lower their property values.
In recommending approval of the permit on May 6, the planning commission adopted certain “safeguards.” Those “safeguards” were that no RV shall be established as a permanent residence, but temporary stabilizers and seasonal skirting may be allowed.
Secondly, only motorhomes, fifth-wheels and travel trailers that require full hookups would be allowed. Thirdly, no recreational park trailers or park models would be allowed.
Darryl Muse, speaking for other residents in Park Hill Estates, which is located on a bluff above the proposed park, said, “Nobody in the neighborhood wants it.”
