A national retailer of recreational vehicles has given the state of Kansas another thing to consider as it ponders a decision on building a casino in Wyandotte County, Kan., according to the Kansas City Star.
Officials of Camping World said they would commit to bringing a national recreational vehicle rally to Kansas Speedway in 2010 if the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board grants the speedway and its partners the right to build and manage a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at the track.
Camping World recently signed on as title sponsor of this year’s Sprint Cup race at the Kansas Speedway.
Such a rally could attract 6,000 RVs and 18,000 people. Dubbed the “Heart of America RV and Outdoor Rally,” organizers said it could generate a $10 million economic impact for the area.
“The combination of amenities provided by the speedway and an adjacent premium gaming, entertainment and retail destination development like the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino would make the decision to bring our annual RV rally to Kansas Speedway very easy,” Camping World/FreedomRoads chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis said.
The commitment would be for five years.
The review board is considering four proposals to build a casino in Wyandotte County. The Kansas Speedway proposal is backed by International Speedway Corp. Its partner is the Cordish Co.
Each of the four groups has made an initial presentation to the review board.
The Kansas Speedway group has said that if it is awarded the rights, it will petition NASCAR for a second Sprint Cup date and will also construct a road-racing course in the speedway’s infield to have professional sports-car races and car-club outings.
Speedway president Jeff Boerger said Tuesday that the RV rally represented something that the three other bidders would not be able to offer.
