Forest Services Eyes Camping Fee Hike
Final proposals for increased recreation fees in five Shawnee National Forest campgrounds in southern Illinois will be forwarded to regional officials, Shawnee Supervisor Allen Nicholas announced Aug. 26 in a news release.
Affected areas are the Pine Ridge, Pharoah, Camp Cadiz, Pine Hills and Johnson Creek campgrounds, according to The Southern, Carbondale, Ill.
The proposals include $10 per night fees for camp sites at Pine Ridge, Pharoah, Camp Cadiz and Pine Hills. The current fee, $5 per night, has not been increased in many years.
At Johnson Creek, the nightly fee has been $5 for a single site, $9 for a double site and $12 for a triple site since approximately 1996. The proposed new fees are $10 for a single, $12 for a double and $15 for a triple camp site.
Increasing the price for overnight sites in the campgrounds would bring the fees more in alignment with the local market, the release said.
Nicholas noted that the campsite fee proposals didn’t draw nearly as much opposition from the public as proposals to charge new fees for day use and equestrian use of the designated trail system.
