A new campground is being planned for a vacant plot of land north of Duluth, Minn.
The 30-acre tract would hold about 80 sites, some with electric and water service, Gnesen town officials say.
The campground would be located between the Island Lake Inn and the United Northern Sportsmen’s Club grounds and would be across St. Louis County Highway 4 from the Minnesota Power picnic area on the big reservoir lake, according to the Duluth News Tribune.
The campground is allowable under current town zoning rules, if an environmental assessment worksheet is completed, said Town Clerk Lottie Haller. The Town Board need only approve the environmental review as acceptable.
About 100 people attended a recent public meeting on the plan, with some people raising concerns about pedestrians walking across the road to gain access to Island Lake. Others raised concerns about increased boat traffic on the lake, although the campground would have no boat or lake access.
