KOA Cancels West Coast Jamboree

Kampgrounds of America Inc.’s (KOA) experiment to hold “jamborees” on the West Coast and East Coast in November for its franchisees was short-lived.
KOA Chairman and CEO Jim Rogers confirmed Thursday (Sept. 11) that the West Coast jamboree, scheduled for Nov. 18-20 at the Sheraton Suites Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., has been canceled.
All KOA franchisees are now encouraged to attend the East Coast Jamboree scheduled for Nov. 8-10 at the Myrtle Beach Sheraton in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“We just decided that, during a challenging year, it was more important than ever to bring all of our franchisees together as a group, and not split the country,” explained Mike Gast, vice president of communications.
KOA had scheduled the two jamborees around the InSites Convention & Trade Show in Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 12-15, sponsored by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC).
Rogers, during an interview for a story which will appear in a future issue of Woodall’s Campground Management, said he was disappointed the Pomona location did not appeal to KOA franchisees but he looks forward to having the single-site event in South Carolina.
KOA experimented in 2007 and held its annual convention in conjunction with the InSites Convention in Phoenix, Ariz.
Rogers did not rule out that it might hold another joint convention some day with ARVC but it’s not in its immediate plans.
“We are 48 years old and we still haven’t figured out how to get 75% of our owners together in one place,” Rogers said. “We held 10 regional meetings one year and did that for awhile. We’re continuing to look for answers.”
KOA will hold its annual convention in 2009 in Houston, he noted. ARVC will be meeting in Orlando.
