Eight seminars, a trade show, three campground tours, officer elections and an awards presentation were packed into the annual Twin State Campground Owners Conference Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel in Keene, N.H.
The event attracted 75 campground owners from the host state of New Hampshire and Vermont and seven exhibitors for the trade show.
Randy Packard, chairman of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) Foundation, spoke at one of the eight seminars. He spoke on the topic of Looking at the National Camping Picture, according to Gregg Pitman, executive director of the New Hampshire Campground Owners Association (NeHaCa), the host association.
Other seminars and their presenters were:

  • How to Outlive Your Nest Egg in Retirement, Josh Daly, of The Hartford Co.
  • Firewood and Pests, Kyle Lombard, New Hampshire DRED, the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands.
  • The Shoreline Protection Act, Jay Aube, New Hampshire DES, shoreline protection specialist.
  • Online Campground Directories and Review Sites, Peter Pelland, Pelland Advertising.
  • Working Together: Public and Private Campgrounds, Johanna Lyons, New Hampshire DRED, New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation.
  • New Hampshire Hospitality, Stephanie Seacord, executive director, Granite State Ambassadors.
  • New Concepts in Septic Design, George Fredette, SFC Engineering, Manchester, N.H.
Approximately 50 people participated in the campground tours of Ashuelot River Campground in Swanzey, Shir-Roy Camping Area in Richmond and Woodmore Family Campground & RV Park in Rindge.
    NeHaCA Amends Charter, Bylaws
During the 48th annual business meeting for the New Hampshire association, the association amended its charter and bylaws to allow persons other than campground owners to sit on the board of directors. This provision allows for board members to represent state parks or corporations and allowed for the election of new at-large board members: Dianne Battles, manager of the Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort in Freedom and Greg Goldberg, manager of Sandy Beach RV Resort in Contoocook.
The existing slate of officers was elected for another year. They are: President Dave Reynolds, Sanborn Shore Acres Campground, Hampstead; Vice President Bob French, Mile Away Campground, Henniker; Treasurer Norman Gentry, Circle 9 Ranch Campground, Epsom; and Secretary Ellen Bagley, Autumn Hills Campground, Weare.
NeHaCa also handed out two awards for longtime service to the association. Recipients were Cindy Bradley of Blake’s Brook Campground in Epsom and Neil Emerson of Emerson’s Camping Area in Hampstead. Both had served on the board of directors in various positions for many years.
Bradley chaired the silent auction, which raised more than $4,000 this year. Proceeds go toward Camp Sunshine.
For the first time in several years, the Vermont Campground Association will sponsor the Twin States Conference in 2009. The event will likely be in the St. Johnsbury area in mid-October.
