Florida Panhandle RV Park Sells for $4 Million
Officials in Destin, Fla., handed the owners of the Destin Campground a $4 million check on Wednesday (Dec. 10) to buy the campground and the prime land it occupies. The city plans to use the land to build a road that would relieve traffic on U.S. 98.
At one time the Florida Panhandle campground housed 47 travel trailers and 22 mobile homes. Some people even stayed in tents, according to WJHG-TV, Panama City, Fla.
As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, everything left behind became property of the city of Destin.
City officials have big plans for this property. They hope to build a connector road to help relieve traffic on Highway 98 during spring break and the summer months.
"It was with mixed emotions we were looking through our records and we found out that over the years we've had thousands, literally thousands, of people through this little campground in Destin,” said Carl Napoli, part owner of the campground.
The city still needs to buy several other pieces of property before any road work can begin. City officials hope to have the project completed by 2013.
