A Rocky Mountain National Park official says some campgrounds will be closed this summer as crews work to remove trees affected by the mountain pine beetle, according to the Associated Press.
Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says it's unknown how many sites will be closed and for how long and that visitors should make plans earlier. Last year, the U.S. Forest Service closed nearly two dozen campgrounds in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming because of the hazards caused by dead trees.
Part of the problem is the trees can fall as roots start to rot.
A recent survey of the epidemic showed that the beetles had killed as many as 2 million acres of forests in Colorado.
