Woodall’s Teams at Work on 2010 Directory

Fieldwork has begun on the 73rd annual Woodall’s North American Campground Directory.
Twenty-five rep teams attended a four-day conference last month in Las Vegas and some teams have begun calling on campgrounds, reported Ann Emerson, vice president and publisher for Affinity Group Inc.'s (AGI) Woodall Publications and Affinity Guest Services (AGS).
In addition to the comprehensive North American edition, the information the rep teams gather is also included in the Eastern and Western editions as well as seven regional campground guides, including the Eastern & Western editions and individual regional guides: Far West, Frontier West & Great Plains, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, New York/New England, the South and Canada.
The deadline to complete the database collection and sales visits for the 2010 edition is Aug. 29.
Woodall’s has made just a handful of changes to its database collection this year, according to Emerson. Teams will be asking whether a campground offers a hot tub (rather than a whirlpool) and no longer will inquire about marine/recirculating toilets, cold showers, gasoline and pond swimming.
New Benefits
“We went into this year thinking we need to focus more on campground customers – the people who advertise with us – by including some value-added benefits,” Emerson explained.
So, one of the new features is the “Contact Us Package” which includes latitude and longitude coordinates, physical address, phone number, website URL and e-mail address. “This information is being included in the listings in our 2010 edition for our display advertisers at no charge,” she said. Non-advertising campgrounds for a fee can purchase it. “We are also giving our advertisers added visibility on our website by featuring these locations in our search results on,” continued Emerson.
Also new for 2010 are four-color maps, upgraded from the traditional black and white ones, she added.
And the industry-leading Woodall rating system remains unchanged. The rating system is set up to help consumers identify the level of development found at a given RV park or campground. It wasn’t designed to indicate good, better or best. The more Ws means the more development found at a park. Consumers can then decide how much development (i.e., full hookups, 50- amp receptacles and wide, easy-access interior roads) they want to suit their needs – anywhere from rustic, natural settings to resort-like parks. In addition to the level of development found at a park, the maintenance of the facilities also weighs heavily in the Woodall rating assessment.
Approximately 275,000 copies of the North American directory will be printed and distributed beginning in late November. Copies also will be available at Barnes & Noble, Borders and specialty bookstores, Camping World stores and RV dealerships.

  • The Woodall’s website redesign will be completed and launched in the spring. The new site will make it easier to find campgrounds, Emerson said. The sites will be more visual so the user can get a better feel for the park, she added.
  • Woodall’s also has been designated the official directory for the NASCAR circuit for the next three years.
