Good Sam Club Brings Sea of RVs to Abilene
The Good Sams have rolled back into Abilene, Texas, and the Taylor County Expo Center parking lot is fence-to-fence with the RV enthusiasts’ rigs.
“We’re pleased to welcome the Good Sams to Abilene again,” said Jay Evans, president of the Expo Center board. “They are a great group of people and bring an air of fun along with the dollars they spend in our city.”
This is the second consecutive “Samboree” the group has held in Abilene, and organizers say they’re already contracted to return in the fall for another event, according to the Abilene Reporter News. This week’s event runs through Sunday.
“We love coming to Abilene,” said Karen McAbee, Good Sam Texas state director. “Everyone is so welcoming, Abilene is centrally located, the Expo Center is a great facility, and the staff here has been outstanding.”
McAbee said Samborees are held twice each year – spring and fall. They anticipate more than 500 RVs will be here for the week, pumping more than $300,000 into the economy.
The Samboree features a full schedule of daily programs, seminars, nightly entertainment and the thing many Good Sam-ers like the most: fellowship.
“We look forward to getting together with everyone,” said Dean Ritchey, who along with his wife, Carolyn, has been RVing for more than 10 years. The Ritcheys, whose home base is in Paradise, Texas, have taken their RV to all the “lower 48” states.
The Good Sam Club is a national organization of RV enthusiasts. Texas Good Sam Chapters consists of 17 areas comprising a total of 116 local chapters and a statewide area consisting of three chapters.
McAbee said that although most of the Abilene Samboree attendees will be from the states in this region (Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas), she anticipates as many as 20 other states may be represented.
