Staff ‘Pumped’ for Improved Campground
Despite the long, cold winter, significant progress has been made on upgrades at Twin Grove Resort and Campground in east central Pennsylvania, which is now open on weekends, according to the Lebanon (Pa.) Daily News.
Thirty-five, two-room, Amish-built camping cottages and 43 deluxe recreational vehicle pull-through sites are up and running, owner Tyler Phillips said last week. A wastewater-treatment plant was built and general improvements have been made throughout the 105-acre property.
Phillips says the most significant change, though, involves his 50-person staff.
“We’ve hired new people and we have a really, really intense customer focus,” Phillips said.
He feels his investment in his staff is the most significant change he’s made since he and his business partner, Philip Moreau, bought the property for $2.5 million in July.
Each staff member is being cross-trained to improve the staff’s flexibility.
“As you cross-train, your salary goes up,” Phillips said. “Each associate is responsible to track one hour for every 20 hours worked to get better at the job they’re doing or training in a new job. We call it Twin Grove university. They self-grade each week. They are pumped. It’s created a buzz within the workers.”
Among the general upgrades are an arts-and-crafts center above what had been an ice-cream building, a lounge in the main resort building, a travel center with desktop computers, a snack shack in the resort center that opens into the camp center and pool, a fitness area, a teen center, an upgraded arcade, an expanded paintball course and a fleet of Segways, which can be used for tours around the Twin Grove walking trail and the adjacent Swatara State Park.
A 120-seat outdoor patio is being added to the restaurant. Twin Grove has applied for a hotel liquor license to serve beer and wine.
“We want to maintain the family nature of the park,” Phillips said, noting that Disney properties offer adult beverages.
The restaurant, amusement area and paintball course are open from Friday afternoon through Sunday until Memorial Day, when the pool and the rest of the park will open on a daily basis through Labor Day.
