California Campgrounds Packed for Weekend
California’s state parks are seeing campsite bookings beyond anything they’ve ever seen, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Of the 15,000 campsites statewide, 11,000 have a reservation system. As of 1:15 p.m. Monday (May 18), there were 10,000 reservations for the holiday weekend, meaning that, for the first time, the parks system is almost completely sold out, said Sheryl Watson, parks spokeswoman in Sacramento.
“We found that people are making reservations for more than two nights,” she said. “It used to be people would book for two nights, such as Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday. Now, people are reserving three nights — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — then going home Monday.”
Citing the economy, Watson credits the increase in camping reservations to cost.
“We keep our prices low so that we can be affordable for everyone,” she said.
