Accused Driver in Camping Fatality in Court
The woman accused of backing her van over a tent where a family was resting, killing a 4-month-old infant, made her first court appearance in Renville County, Minn., this morning (July 8).
The judge set bail at $500,000 for Nicolle Prechel, 31, with no conditions, or a conditional $200,000, according to KEYC-TV, Mankato, Minn.
Prechel also requested a speedy trial.
Prosecutors say she had a preliminary blood alcohol level of over twice the legal limit when she drove the van over the tent last weekend in the Renville County campground near Morton. Four-month old Wyatt Sander of Redwood Falls was in the tent with his parents and was killed.
His mother was also injured.
Prechel is facing charges including criminal vehicular homicide, third-degree DWI and driving with a suspended license.
The child and his mother were dragged under the vehicle when the van’s driver allegedly backed over and through the tent at the Renville County campground near Morton at about 8:40 a.m. Sunday.
The baby was pronounced dead upon arrival in the emergency room at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital, the sheriff’s office said. The mother survived and was in stable condition at the hospital.
