Montana Rockies Forest Fire 50% Contained
About 350 firefighters battling the Indian Trail fire north of Helena, Mont., had it 50% contained Sunday (Sept. 13) and were working to extend fire lines and do some mopping up within the fire perimeter, according to the Associated Press.
Brian LaMoure, a fire information officer, said the fire was about 6.9 square miles in size but the weather has been cooperating and allowing firefighters to make good progress.
He said there are no injuries though some firefighters have reported being stung by wasps.
LaMoure says the cost of fighting the human-caused blaze that started Wednesday near a campground in the Holter Lake area so far is $1.1 million.
He says the number of helicopters fighting the flames was reduced from six on Saturday to three on Sunday.
Campgrounds in the area remain closed and LaMoure says they will likely stay that way once the fire is extinguished due to the danger posed by scorched trees that could fall over.
