Explosion Rocks Trailer in Oregon RV Resort
An explosion Monday afternoon (Dec. 21) ripped through a fifth-wheel trailer parked in the Knox Butte RV Park in Albany, Ore.
Trailer owner Clyde Schell reported only minor injuries, including a singed beard, according to the Gazette-Times, Albany.
He was seen in an ambulance at the scene but declined further treatment.
Residents said the sound and the explosion "rocked the park."
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, said Wanda Omdahl, spokeswoman for the Albany Fire Department, which responded.
Schell told firefighters a company had worked on the furnace's fan motor two hours before the blast.
"Two hours after the work was done, Schell came home and sat down in a chair," Omdahl said. "He started to hear a click-click-click sound, which he thought was the pilot light trying to light."
Omdahl said Schell knew to get out of the trailer immediately. Right after he did, the explosion occurred.
The 1988 Mallard Sprinter trailer was a complete loss. Omdahl said damage to the trailer and its contents were estimated at $10,000. She thought Schell might be able to salvage a few of his belongings.
