2005ARVC Logo CMYKMost Snow Birds arrive at their winter destinations just after the holidays. But many Sunbelt campgrounds and RV parks are organizing dinners, dances and live entertainment to keep their guests entertained through the holidays.

“We’re seeing more and more campgrounds, RV parks and resorts developing activities and special events to keep their guests entertained through the holidays,” said Linda Profaizer, president and CEO of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC).

These events are not only entertaining, but provide guests with opportunities to meet one another and build a sense of community for the winter season, she said. From an ARVC news release, here’s a sampling of the some of the parks that are planning special events this holiday season:

  • Bakersfield RV Resort,  Bakersfield, Calif.: This park features holiday hay rides and Christmas caroling with Mr. and Mrs. Claus during the first three weekends of December. Then, on New Year’s Eve, the park will celebrate the arrival of 2010 with live music, complimentary appetizers, Louisiana-style gumbo and a champagne toast at midnight. This is in addition to a horseshoe tournament, bingo, golf putting and Wii tournaments, which will take place throughout New Year’s weekend.
  • Black Canyon City KOA, Black Canyon City, Ariz.: This park will host its annual potluck for park guests on Christmas Eve. Fifty-four campers participated in a similar potluck event on Thanksgiving.
  • Campland on the Bay, San Diego, Calif.: On Christmas Eve, the park will also offer a coloring contest for kids, while its New Year’s Eve activities include separate parties for adults and children, both of which are topped off by an 11:45 p.m. fireworks display on the bay.
  • Fun N Sun RV Resort, San Benito, Texas: This park is planning a Christmas lighting contest from Dec. 15 to 31 with a Christmas Eve Pageant and Christmas Day dinner as well as an elegant New Year’s dinner and dance.
  • Manchester Beach KOA, Manchester, Calif.: This park is hosting a New Year’s Eve potluck gala. The park supplies the main entrée, champagne, party supplies, music and games, while the guests bring their favorite side dish.
  • Naples/Marco Island KOA, Naples, Fla.: This park supplies turkey and ham for a potluck dinner on Christmas Day. The park also hosts a campsite decorating contest.
  • Okeechobee KOA, Okeechobee, Fla.: This park is having a campsite decorating contest, with judging Dec. 20, a caroling party in Dec. 21, a Christmas Eve service, a pot luck family Christmas Dinner with the turkey provided by the park and a New Year’s Ball.
  • Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort, Casa Grande, Ariz.: This park will offer a dinner and show on Christmas Day, while its New Year’s Eve festivities will include hors d’ oeuvres, a Western electric band and a champagne toast at midnight.
  • Silver Creek Campground, Mount Hermon, La.: This park will host a New Year’s Eve party with a bonfire, finger foods, entertainment and fireworks.
  • St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA, St. Petersburg, Fla.: This park’s holiday activities include Christmas caroling and a chili cookout by campfire, candlelight services on Christmas Eve, a Christmas turkey and ham dinner and a campsite decorating contest on Dec. 27.
  • The Springs at Borrego RV Resort, Borrego Springs: This park’s December events include a traditional Lakota Medicine Wheel ceremony and a Winter Solstice Party with live music on Dec. 19 and a Christmas Day potluck dinner with a roasted ham provided by the park. The park is also planning a Karaoke New Year’s Eve party.
  • Towerpoint RV Resort, Mesa, Ariz.: This park’s ballroom will be the venue for several special events during the holidays, including a Missouri Opry Christmas Show concert on Dec. 22, a community Christmas dinner on Dec. 25, a dinner and dance on New Year’s Eve and a piano concert on Jan. 3.
  • Verde Valley RV Resort and Campground, Cottonwood, Ariz.: This park will host a “Dinner Around the World” event on Dec. 19, featuring food from Italy, France, China, England and Mexico as well as “Mom’s Table in the U.S.A.” The park also plans to have a potluck on Christmas Day and a New Year’s Eve social hour, dinner and entertainment by the Johnny Lingo Trio.
  • Voyager RV Resort, Tucson, Ariz.: This park’s holiday activities include a Christmas dinner, a year-end dance on Dec. 27 and a New Year’s Eve party with dancing.
  • Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, Waller, Texas: This park is having a potluck dinner on Christmas day as well as caroling on hay rides, while its New Year’s weekend festivities include another potluck dinner, a Big Apple Countdown at Midnight with party hats, noise makers and music as well as prizes for the best resolution and karaoke singer.
