Though more people visited Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park in 2009 than in the year before, it didn’t crack the 3 million visitor mark, but it came close, according to The Coloradoan, Fort Collins.

The park saw 2,823,415 visitors last year — 2.4% more than in 2008, according to National Park Service statistics released Tuesday (Jan. 5).

The park hit 3 million visitors six other times in its history: 1978, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003.

The most people ever to have visted the park was in 1999, when more than 3,186,000 people passed through the park’s boundaries.
