RV Wholesale Shipments End 2009 on Positive Note

RV shipments to retailers closed 2009 on a high note.

Shipments were reported at 14,000 units in the December 2009 survey of manufacturers, an increase of 2% from November but 150% above December one year ago, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

The December shipment total represents an annualized rate of nearly 230,000 units, three times the rate for this same month in 2008, and offering an optimistic view of future RV shipments, RVIA noted.

By segment, RVIA reported these December totals and comparison to December 2008 shipments:

  • Travel trailers, 8,400, plus 162.5%.
  • Fifth-wheel trailers, 3,300, plus 120%.
  • Folding camping trailers, 600, plus 100%.
  • Truck campers, 100, plus 108%.
  • Class A motorhomes, 900, plus 125%.
  • Class B motorhomes, 100, plus 142%.
  • Class C motorhomes, 600, plus 200%.

For all of 2009, the industry shipped 152,500 towable units and 13,200 motorized units for a total of 165,700, down 30.1% from the 208,700 towables and 28,300 motorhomes or 237,000 combined units shipped in 2008.

For all of 2009, the segment totals were as follows, followed by comparisons to 2008 year-end totals:

  • Travel trailers, 101,500, minus 20.8%.
  • Fifth-wheels, 36,800, minus 35.4%.
  • Folding camping trailers, 12,00, minus 34.9%.
  • Truck campers, 1,900, minus 59.6%.
  • Class A motorhomes, 5,900, minus 60.4%.
  • Class B motorhomes, 1,200, minus 36.8%.
  • Class C motorhomes, 6,100, minus 47.0%.
