Vancouver Suburb to Host Its Own RV Park for Games

January 18, 2010 by   - () 1 Comment

While Vancouver, British Columbia, isn’t having much success promoting its Olympic RV parks, a suburban Vancouver charitable organization hopes to cash in.

The Rotary Club of Steveston is hosting its own $50 per night Richmond 2010 Olympic RV park at Steveston Park and Garry Point Park for the duration of the Winter Olympic Games, according to the Richmond News.

Last month the city of Vancouver had to pare down its Olympic RV park plan to just one site due to the lack of demand.

But the anticipated downturn in demand hasn’t deterred the Rotarians from forging ahead with their own plan to raise money for local charities.

“We’ve had quite a few inquiries so far from Vancouver Island and Washington state, but no reservations as yet,” said club treasurer Peter Mitchell.

“We’ll be out there to provide a service for anyone coming into Richmond for the games.

“We will get bookings I’m sure, but I don’t think it’s going to be extremely high.”

Mitchell explained that the two RV lots — which do have the city of Richmond’s permission — will be at the La Crosse parking lot in Steveston Community Park and in Garry Point Park parking lot.

“The spaces at Garry Point will be the furthest ones from the park, as we don’t want to take up parking spaces right next to the park,” Mitchell said.

It’s not the first time the club has helped organize a temporary RV park.

For the BC Seniors Games in the summer the club had around 80 RVs parked near the oval or at South Arm Pool parking lot.

Mitchell said that a couple of members will be at the lots to check people into the site and also pass through the sites during the day to check everything is OK.

For the $50 per night, each RV owner will have access to parking from Feb. 9 to March 2, or $60 for a 120-volt 15-amp electrical hook-up, indoor 24-hour washroom access and Steveston Community Center showers during opening hours.

Anyone from out of town thinking about coming to the games in their RV should log onto www.stevestonrotary.org/rvpark or e-mail steveston_rotary@shaw.ca.

Net proceeds from the RV park will go to local charities.

As of February 16 the lacrosse location of our temporary Steveston RV Park is 3/4s full.

Everyone wants spots with electricity, and we still have some (120V 15A).

We and those visiting are happy with results.
