Carolinas ARVC Continues Healthy Growth Spurt

The Carolinas Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (CARVC) continues to enjoy a resurgence in interest among its membership from North Carolina and South Carolina.

Attendance at its annual Convention and Expo Feb. 22-23 at Lakewood Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C., attracted 65 people from approximately 30 campgrounds in the two states as well as 22 vendor firms, according to Dana Gabriel, CARVC president.

“The conference attendance has doubled the past several years,” Gabriel said, while noting that vendor attendance is many times greater from the single-digit marks of just a few years ago.

Gabriel said the mood of the campground owners and operators was equally upbeat.

“Most folks had at least a steady year in 2009,” she said. “We haven’t had a lot of parks that experienced a big downturn. In today’s economy, if you broke even you’re doing well.”

She said parks reported that campers are making holiday bookings now and not waiting, unlike last year when last-minute bookings created a lot of “nail-biting” among CARVC members.

Special guests at the two-day convention included Daniel Gurley, director of membership with the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC), and Mike Hobby from Moon Landing RV Resort and Marina, Cross Hill, S.C., the ARVC board member representing Region 4.

At the general business meeting, CARVC members approved a new budget and elected one new board member, Mark Norton, from Valley Park RV Resort, Travelers Rest, S.C. All other incoming board members were re-elected.

CARVC got significant media coverage with two local TV stations and local newspapers reporting on the convention, Gabriel noted. CARVC sent out a news release prior to the convention, and the Myrtle Beach convention and visitors bureau made other media contacts, which helped bring in the media, she said.

CARVC members also enjoyed a birthday cake in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the RV industry which is being commemorated in 2010.

CARVC will holds its 2011 convention Feb. 14-15 again in the Myrtle Beach area, Gabriel said.
