Red star marks the locaiton of a fire burning hundreds of acres of forest in New Jersey.

Firefighters today (July 27) were still attempting to contain a major forest fire in the Pinelands near Bass River, N.J.

Radio station KYW, Philadelphia, reported that hundreds of acres are burning and crews are using helicopters and bulldozers to fight the blaze which forced closing of a popular campground.

Bert Plante of the state forest fire service says no injuries have been reported but officials had to evacuate the area.

“The campgrounds and the lake and the swimming area, all of that was pretty much in the path of the fire so the first thing we had to do was basically close down Bass River Park,” Plante said.

The park is about 20 miles north of Atlantic City, in Burlington County.
