Arkansas Rec Area to Reopen on Friday
Two areas of the Albert Pike Recreation area near Langley, Ark., that were closed after a deadly flash flood in June are set to reopen at 11 a.m. Friday (Aug. 27), The Associated Press reported.
The U.S. Forest Service says the areas reopening will be for day use only. Officials are still considering whether overnight camping will ever be allowed again.
The two areas being opened include access to a popular swimming area on the west side of the Little Missouri River. None of the 20 who died in the predawn June 11 flood were staying in those areas — most were sleeping in recreational vehicles on the other side of the river in an area that remains closed.
