The two-week hunt for accused child abductor Stephen Westfall ended late Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 17) near the Little Meadows Campground on Chestnut Ridge Road, just off Interstate 68, near Grantsville, Md.

Westfall, 44, of Cumberland, Md., faces numerous charges, including kidnapping a child under 16, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, the Keyser Daily Mineral News Tribune reported. He is being held without bond.

Police said Wednesday that they became aware of Westfall's presence in the Little Meadows area when he attempted to call his girlfriend. Officers with the Maryland State Police Child Recovery Unit determined that the phone call originated from a church at Little Meadows, and when they responded to the scene, they found the suspect at the rear of the building.

According to police, Westfall had entered the church through an unlocked door.

Tracing the route of Westfall's two-week run from the law, investigators said he left Cumberland after the Aug. 5 abduction by walking north on the Allegheny Highland's trail, continuing on the path until he reached Ligonier, where he continued north to Pittsburgh.

Once there he obtained new clothing, and spent a week in the Pittsburgh area before returning to Grantsville Monday.

After reaching Grantsville, police said, Westfall spent the night in the woods near the Little Meadows Campground.

Police said they do not believe anyone knowingly assisted Westfall in avoiding capture.

A crew from America's Most Wanted was in Cumberland Tuesday, filming a segment on Westfall that was to air this weekend. The TV crew was instead able to capture the end of the search, filming Westfall as he was being led into the Cumberland Police Department after his arrest.
