Lodge Director Named Minnesota's Top Resorter
Jim Benson, director of operations for Grand View Lodge, Nisswa, Minn., has been named 2010 Resorter of the Year by the Minnesota Resort and Campground Association (MRCA), the Brainerd Daily Dispatch reported.
The announcement was made Wednesday night (Oct. 27) during the organization's Fall Conference at Chase on the Lake in Walker.
The news release announcing Benson as Resorter of the Year said Benson got his start in the hospitality industry as a busboy at the New Ulm Country Club in his hometown. In 1983, he moved to Brainerd Lakes area and took a job as a bartender at Madden's Resort. He later become assistant manager after a short stint working in Florida. He also managed Madden's Pine Edge Inn in Little Falls, but returned to Madden's Brainerd facility to serve as the resident manager. He was promoted to general manager of Madden's Lodge in 1991.
In 2005, Benson took a job as general manager of The Lodge at Brainerd Lakes, where he stayed for two years. His heart was in the resort industry, though, and in 2007 he became director of operations for Grand View Lodge.
Benson has represented his industry well for many years on the Minnesota Resort and Campground Association's board of directors, serving as president in 2006. He also represents the association on the Hospitality Minnesota management board, which oversees the MRCA, as well as the Minnesota Restaurant Association and the Minnesota Lodging Association.
Locally, Benson has been involved in his community and church. He has served on many different committees at the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, including on the board from 2006 to 2009.
