The Ohio Campground Owners Association’s (OCOA) 2010 Fall Fun Day & POOT (Park Operators on Tour) turned out 75 people representing 32 campgrounds Oct. 19-20 at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio. The event was hosted by the Central District and planned by Mark and Kathy Kasper of Lazy River at Granville campground.

“There was a real spirit of camaraderie at the event and members truly enjoyed gathering ideas and networking,” said Christy Smith, OCOA executive director.

Each fall the OCOA Fall Conference is held in a different region of the state. During the conference OCOA members spend time visiting several campgrounds in that region during the tour. Members also partake in a Fun Day taking in the sites, attractions and activities of the area.

This year’s Fun Day included touring various attractions in Newark, such as the Dawes Arboretum and the Longaberger Basket Co. headquarters.

“Following a home-cooked meal at Miller’s Essenplatz, we held a Cracker Barrel session, an informal group discussion where industry hot topics and other issues of interest to attendees were discussed,” Smith said. “Everything from health insurance, gray water, Wi-Fi and social media was discussed.”

The group also discussed the fact that the entire state of Ohio is now under the Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine. Emerald Ash Borer is an ash tree-killing insect from Asia, which was first identified in Ohio in 2003. The Ohio Department of Agriculture has developed a response plan, battling the pest to protect the state’s more than 3.8 billion ash trees.

The association also took note that the Ohio Department of Health is reviewing the state's swimming pool rules and is conducting meetings around the state on that subject.

On Oct. 20 the group set out on a tour of Central District campgrounds including Buckeye Lake KOA (Buckeye Lake), Dogwood Valley (Mt. Gilead), Cardinal Center Campground (Marengo), Tree Haven Campground (Westerville), and Lazy River at Granville (Granville).

Next year  OCOA will visit the northwest region of Ohio. OCOA’s next major event is the Spring Conference & Trade Show March 11-12 at the Columbus Airport Marriott Hotel.
