Trailway Campground in downtown Montague, Mich., is turning out to be one of the city’s hidden gems, The White Lake Beacon, Whitehall, reported.

The 55-site campground, located near the state's Lake Michigan coastline, offers a centralized location, but still holds true to the camping feel, said Trailway manager Sue Siwicke, who manages the city-owned grounds with husband, Joe.

And, campers have taken notice, making 2010 a banner year for the campground, with sales increasing 6.5% over the previous year.

“People are staying closer to home these days,” Siwicke said, when asked about the increased usage. “Our location is key. too. It’s in the middle of everything.”

Trailway also benefits from 35 seasonal-site holders who come back year after year.

Siwicke said it feels like home to many of the regular seasonal campers, as well as her and Joe. “Everyone looks out for each other,” she added.

As manager of the Trailway campground, Siwicke hears all sorts of comments from regulars and first-timers.
