Residents of Dennisport, Mass., on Tuesday night (Nov. 16) embraced the town’s traditional cottage colonies, the Boston Herald reported.

Voters attending the special town meeting at Wixon Middle School overwhelmingly approved new zoning that creates a seasonal resort community along Old Wharf and Old Chatham roads.

The new zoning will allow seasonal residents of the decades-old cottage colonies and RV parks to make some improvements in their property and protect them from hotel development.

The properties have been nonconforming uses of the hotel-zoned land since 1973, when town zoning officially prohibited cottage colonies and RV parks.

The issue came to a head last year after a newspaper article said town officials were envisioning a future in which Old Wharf Road in Dennisport was home to high-end resorts instead of the warren of cottages currently in place, said Gregory Stone of the Dennis Economic Development Committee.

"There was pretty loud outcry from the people of that area," Stone said. "We felt we really should try to preserve what has been going on there."

Dennis Town Planner Daniel Fortier met almost every week this summer with residents of Chase’s Ocean Grove, Salt Air Village, the Village on Nantucket Sound, Campers Haven and Ocean View Cape Cod in Dennisport.

The zoning change also affects Old Chatham Road RV Park in South Dennis.
