Oregon: Gambling and Golfing near the Surf

One of the most popular gaming spots in Oregon, the ocean-front Chinook Winds Casino Resort, is transformed into the Arabian Nights on New Year’s Eve. For RV travelers in the region, that means it’s time to head to nearby Logan Road RV Park in Lincoln City, Ore., where you can get into one of the 51 state-of-the-art sites (just a short walking distance from the beach on the magnificent Central Oregon Coast) for as little as $32. And, there’s a shuttle to the casino leaving every 15 minutes. Chinook offers the usual gaming plus six restaurants, a video game arcade, and headliner entertainment (Meatloaf performs Jan. 14). New Year’s Eve’s Arabian Nights will, according to a Chinook representative, “roll out before you, like a magic carpet ride — with games, music, dancing, food, and fun — but at midnight, we’ll pause to count it down to twenty-ten plus one.” What that means is a giant bingo party (with $100 pre-sale before 10 p.m.), big buffet dinner, cider toast and balloon drop at midnight and over $4,500 in cash drawings.

If you stay at Logan Road RV Park, you can get different action the next day, too: Chinook Winds Golf Resort hosts the largest Indoor Driving Range in the Northwest, a 12,000-square-foot hitting area that overlooks the golf course and PGA instructors are available six days a week for private lessons.

Reservations can be made online or by calling (877) LOGANRV.

Florida: Way Down Upon the Suwannee River

It was little surprise last year when Florida Monthly magazine named The Spirit of the Suwannee Music and Campground in Live Oak, Florida, the best live music venue in the state (beating out Disney World for that top honor). That’s because this live music venue is a park, campground, natural amphitheater, local hot spot and so much more, making it a great place for RVers to spend New Year’s Eve. Boasting 600 improved campsites (with full hookups, showers and bath house and a full-service restaurant) and 800 acres of primitive camping, the campground is nestled on the banks of the titular tea-colored Suwannee River in North Florida and it host a variety of events throughout the year as well as live music during the week in the Music Hall. Year-round campers can hike, canoe, bird watch, play putt put or disc golf, and see the world’s largest bat house and a honey bee observation exhibit and visit the Arts and Crafts Village or the Country Store. New Year’s Eve will play host to a popular Trail Ride along historic Suwannee River and a party with live entertainment from the Loren Proper Band. All this for $25 and up, and this is rare RV park where you can also bring your horses with you. For more information and reservations call 386-364-1683 or visit their website.

Texas: World’s Largest Outdoor Trading Post

Rare among RV parks is something commonplace at Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton, Texas: a concierge service that will escort you to your site and assist with your set up. It’s one of the reasons travelers love this resort, which offers lakeside or tree-lined sites with stand-up grills, patio tables, lighted pedestals and fire rings that make being outdoors at night easy. (Even better, your first nights firewood is free.) But on New Year’s Eve, it’s all about location drawing RVers to Mill Creek because this RV resort is located across the road from the world famous open-air flea market First Monday Trade Days, and the world’s largest outdoor trade days will happen Dec. 30 to Jan. 2. First Monday boasts over 100 acres of shopping on a plot where cell phones don’t work so remember to bring cash, rent a wagon or cart and get a map at the entrance, and remember a landmark near where you parked. Their website offers more tips to make the most of your experience. Mill Creek offers a shuttle service that makes leaving your car home or at the site a no-brainer, while you dig for loot across the street. RVers with pooches will enjoy the fenced in dog park area, there are the usual showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities, frequent trash pick-up at your site, an on-site general store, and an RV Lodge with game tables, large screen TV, and free coffee. Mill Creek is also the only Good Sam top-rated park in Texas, and one of only a few in the U.S. to get such high marks, according to Trailer Life’s Betsy Brock.
