Ontario’s Knight’s Beach Resort Wins Top Award
To Marlene McKay, the phrase “happy campers” is more than a catch-phrase; it’s her job.
The general manager of Knight’s Beach in Dunnville, Ontario, located on Lake Erie west of Buffalo, N.Y., just learned that the resort was selected among hundreds across the province and named Campground of the Year for 2010, the Dunnville Chronicle reported.
Pristine, sandy beaches and high standards of maintenance are just two attractive attributes that captured an Award of Excellence for the Lakeshore Road resort, said McKay.
“We were overwhelmed,” she said, speaking on behalf of owner David Wasserman.
“Our beaches are what did it. We have a beach cleaner and it’s very rare to have such a well-maintained beach. It’s almost like Cuban sand.”
The first-time prestigious award came after 42 years in the campground business, and was based on numerous criteria, including the resort’s sprawling park, family restaurant and customer service, among many other factors, McKay explained.
“It’s a series of questions we have to submit. All privately owned campgrounds were at the OPCA (Ontario Private Campgrounds Association) dinner gala last week with the Minister of Tourism. Out of all those people, it was quite a high (to win), that’s for sure. We have a great staff and we’re very flattered,” she said.
In addition to 450 campsites, Knight’s Beach houses seasonal trailers, a restaurant, ice cream parlor, 10,000-square-foot recreation complex with arcade, sports bar with satellite, licenced patio that’s open to the public, and banquet room, plus hundreds of picnic tables.
“We do a lot of day tripping,” said McKay. “We offer day passes and family passes, and we’re targeting Toronto” and other areas, she added.
In addition to swimming, wagon rides, nature trails and other activities make it a prime family vacation spot.
“This year, we’ve expanded and done kids’ birthday parties and weddings. People came in and loved having their kids on the beach and playing in the arcade. They spent a fun-filled day outside.”The campground has seen several updates recently, particularly in the restaurant, and a full-scale grand opening — featuring promotional prices and specials — is in the works for next spring.
Knight’s Beach Resort’s season typically runs from May 1 to Oct. 19. Further information is available at www.knightsbeach.com and on Facebook at Knights Beach Ontario.
