Newspaper Sides with Campers for Festival Camping
Editor’s Note: The following editorial appeared in the Palm Springs, Calif., Desert Sun and pertains to camping policies at music festival in and around the city of Indio.
The city of Indio is being too restrictive with camping that occurs on private property during the Coachella Valley Music & Arts and Stagecoach festivals.
The city council last week approved 4-1 an interim urgency ordinance that temporarily bans unregulated campgrounds in the city during large concerts. The law also incorporates permitted camping. Camping will still be allowed at the Empire Polo Club as well as for residents and their families on private property.
The Indio Police Department had requested the 45-day moratorium on private campgrounds to reduce potential public safety hazards during the huge festivals.
The city should continue to allow people to let concert visitors camp on their private property.
And the property owners, in turn, should make sure they’re responsible for those camping out.
