VENDOR PROFILE: Jamestown Advanced Products
Editor’s Note: The following story is one in a series of stories on key vendors in the RV park and campground business. Read about this and other stories in the March issue of Woodall’s Campground Management.
Jamestown Advanced Products Corp., Jamestown, N.Y., is a custom steel manufacturing plant with 196,000 square feet of production space and over a decade of experience in custom design fabrication.
Jamestown Advanced Products in 1995 developed and began manufacturing a line of campground and park products utilized by state parks, municipalities, federal properties and privately owned campgrounds across the U.S. and Canada.
The company, owned by Wendi A. Lodestro, president, and Lee Lodestro, vice president, specializes in the designing, welding and fabrication of steel products for the RV park and campground arena that, according to the Lodestros, are extremely durable and competitively priced.
Wendi started working with her father, Jon Wehrenberg, in 1989 when Jamestown Advanced was only two years old. In 1991, Lee joined the business in an engineering capacity. In 1994, Jon and his wife, Diane Wehrenberg, started to tour the country and camp.
“It was then that Jon saw a lot of items that Jamestown could produce in the campground industry,” explained Robb Jones, sales manager. “In 1994 they started with a grill and a fire ring and each year since then have added a multitude of products.”
Wendi and Lee Lodestro in 1999 bought the business when the Wehrenbergs decided to retire to Knoxville, Tenn. “Since purchasing the business, sales and employment has doubled,” Jones said. “Lee and Wendi both look forward to future growth in the campground industry over the next several years.”
Jamestown’s line of products includes ADA-compliant fire rings, park grills, power outlets, picnic tables, pedestal tables, portable tables, park benches, contour benches, players benches, radius benches, dumpsters, recycle bins, trash receptacles, lantern holders, bike racks, animal-resistant lockers and food storage lockers. Pedestal tables are available with lumber or metal with thermoplastic coating. Picnic tables and some benches are available with treated or untreated wood or plastic lumber.
“Our newest product we are very excited about is the Fire View Ring,” Jones said. “Specifically designed with the U.S. Forest Service in mind, but useful to anyone, this new ring is based off the design of our Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant fire ring for certain dimensions. This is the first of its kind within the industry and no one else makes it.”
While all of the company’s ADA products meet Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG) and a variety of other federal benchmarks, Jamestown Advanced prides itself on its very short lead time for deliveries.
“We are among the fastest, if not the fastest at turning out a delivery to our customers in the industry,” Jones said. “Another companywide asset is our ability to adapt quickly as a whole. Whether it is modifying our product through the engineering department or sensing economic climate changes, Jamestown Advanced Products has been nimble in keeping the company properly positioned and meeting customer’s needs. This is possible mainly because of the talented people at Jamestown Advanced Products, our lean manufacturing philosophy and the leadership that encourages working together.”
According to Jones, Jamestown Advanced finished its strongest sales year to date in 2010 and is geared to making 2011 its strongest year ever in promoting its products on a national scale. “We know there are opportunities throughout the U.S.,” Jones said. “If a particular project is taking place within a region or sector of a state, we will target it. We are particularly strong within the Northeast due to our proximity to New York, but have customers and seek customers all over the country.
“We have seen progress into new markets and have made headway into new areas throughout the United States,” he added. “We see this as laying the path for the years ahead. As more public and private campgrounds, parks, municipalities and townships use our products and see their quality, they will be the standard for their outdoor equipment in the future.”
