Park Owner Fined for Underage Booze Party
The owner of the Birch Hill Campground near New Durham, N.H., was fined $310 after pleading no contest to a charge of facilitating an underage drinking party at the campground last summer, Foster’s Daily Democrat reported.
Richard Morell, 57, of Portsmouth, paid the fine at Rochester District Court on his scheduled trial date of March 22. According to documents filed at the court, Morell was given a $500 fine with $250 suspended and $60 in additional fees.
On August 7, 2010, police said they conducted a search warrant at the Birch Hill Campground located at 333 Birch Hill Road. Police had received information the owner of the camp was having an underage party where alcohol was being provided to underage counselors, and New Durham Police obtained the search warrant through Rochester District Court.
At 10:30 p.m. police conducted the search with the warrant. Chief Shawn Bernier said seven officers were used to execute the warrant and arrest individuals on scene.
Bernier said police had received information he was allegedly providing alcohol to underaged individuals “through people familiar with the camp.”
In addition to Morell, five other people were arrested that night for drug or alcohol-related offenses. Police said 21 additional people under the age of 21 were placed into protective custody and released to individuals at the camp.
