Sioux Falls Campground Packed
Memorial Day Weekend typically kicks off the summer camping season. But for one Sioux Falls, S.D., campground the rush has already begun, KELO-TV, Sioux Falls, reported.
Curtis Guderjahn is on his way home to northwest Minnesota after a long winter down South.
"We're coming from Clearwater, Fla.," Guderjahn said.
To break up the drive, the snowbird stayed a night at Tower Campground. When he arrived in Sioux Falls, Guderjahn was surprised to see he wasn't alone.
"It was quite full," Guderjahn said.
Forty-two of the campground's 53 sites were filled Monday night. A trend that started last month.
"We've been real pleased. We've been running over half full since the first of April and up even more since mid-April," said Judi VanHeuvelen whose park is participating in a 20% discount program through Go Camping America..
VanHeuvelen manages the campground and says business is up considerably from last year, and she believes that could be for a number of reasons.
"Some of it is repeat business. We've had folks coming back; quite a few visitors stopping, coming back from down south for the winter," VanHeuvelen said.
She also thinks more people are sticking closer to the city to save money, and for the attractions, and activities.
"I think once people realize how much there is to do right here in this area that we may find that to be true, I think we're going to find people making a longer stay of it," VanHeuvelen said.
The campground has been making improvements and plans to do more, and the changes are not going unnoticed.
"Looks pretty nice, wide-open lots," Guderjahn said.
There's plenty of space to stretch out if you can get a site before they sell out.
