The first electric vehicle charging station along the Grand Strand and the coastal Carolinas opened Wednesday (June 22) in a place where other plug-ins are already the norm – a campground.

Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, S.C., set up two charging stations for electric vehicles near the entrance of the mega oceanfront complex in Horry County, aiming to serve guests who tow their electric cars to the beach and even nonguests who need a charge, the Myrtle Beach Sun News reported.

Campground guests can charge for free, while others will pay $5 to get in the campground and can use the campground’s snack bar, store or other amenities while they wait the four hours for the charge.

It’s not like EV owners have been lining up for charges at the campground; there aren’t that many of the cars on Grand Strand roads yet, though some guests use EV cars to zoom around town. But Ocean Lakes wanted to be ready for the demand, officials said, and is following the trend nationwide of campgrounds embracing their charging capabilities by setting aside special stations for electric vehicles.
