Fire Closes Mount Hood Campgrounds
A wildfire burning out of control on the east side of Mount Hood near Parkdale, Ore., has closed several trails and campgrounds, KPTV-TV, Portland, reported.
The fire likely started sometime last week during a thunderstorm over the mountain, said Rick Acosta, a spokesman for the Mount Hood National Forest. Acosta says the fire was first reported over the weekend.
On Monday morning, there was a visible column of smoke over the fire. The exact size of the fire isn’t known, but officials estimate it could be about 400 to 500 acres.
So far, the U.S. Forest Service handling fighting the fire, but they are organizing the effort out of the Northwest Coordination.
Several trails and campgrounds threatened by the fire have been closed or evacuated as a precaution.
