Metro Detroit’s Haas Lake Park Marks 40th Anniversary
The only down side to going up north for a getaway camping trip is the long drive — unless you’re among the families who know about Haas Lake Recreation and RV Campground right in New Hudson, Mich.
Sue Hull drives the short distance from her Howell home and has been bringing her four children to the campgrounds for 35 years. Now her 16 grandchildren are coming, too, the Observer & Eccentric reported.
“The kids love it,” she said. “We’re ready to quit, but the kids and grandkids say, ‘No we’re coming every year.’”
Her sister, Judy Bruening Honkanen, of Westland, has been setting up her campsite nearby all along. First she brought her two children and now her grandson is being introduced to the summertime outings.
“We stayed all summer,” Bruening Honkanen said. “There are memories and stuff you can’t take away.”
Families like the Hulls and Honkanens have been spending their summers in the idyllic spot in the metro Detroit area for 40 years when it was first opened by Dallas and Virginia Fletcher and Clayton and Ruth E. Rickard who took a field that was mined for peat and saw something that people who love the outdoors could enjoy for generations.
