NEW YORK

From The Associated Press:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has reopened some trails in the Adirondack High Peaks region hard-hit by Tropical Storm Irene, but advises hikers to avoid the backcountry in the Catskills due to extensive storm damage to trails and local highways.

A list of open DEC campgrounds is continuously being updated on the DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/public/76659.html.

In the Adirondacks, the eastern zone of the High Peaks Wilderness and Giant Mountain Wilderness areas were re-opened effective Thursday. Dix Mountain Wilderness area and a number of trails in the reopened areas will remain closed.

The DEC says hikers are likely to encounter flooding, bridge washouts, trail washouts and blowdown in the backcountry and should be prepared to turn back if conditions warrant
