Argentine Ant

From The National Park Service:

An ant infestation is forcing the closure of a campground at Maui’s Haleakala National Park.

The National Park Service says the Holua campground will be closed tonight (Oct. 19) and reopen Friday morning.

The campground will receive follow-up treatments to control an Argentine Ant infestation.

The Argentine Ant is an invasive species native to South America. The ants were originally found in relatively small areas of Haleakala, but are now spreading.

The park service says it’s necessary to prevent the ants from spreading to other parts of Haleakala. Researchers say the ant is damaging to native insects and plants.

Park managers will treat the Holua campground and the area around the cabins with low- to non-toxic poisons that have little to no odor.

From a press release:

Ocean Lakes Family Campground will host the 7th Annual All-Star Golf Car Show on Saturday (Oct. 22) from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Participants can enter their custom electric golf cars in one of several categories for a chance to win prizes and receive discounts on parts and accessories. The show is free and open to the public.

A new addition this year, in the interest of the campground’s award-winning iCare program and its green efforts, is the celebration of all electric vehicles and their recent arrival on the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach Chevrolet Cadillac will display the Chevy Volt, a high-powered electric drive that boasts 95 MPG and performs 0 to 60 in 9.2 seconds. Grand Strand Nissan representatives will bring the Nissan Leaf, which is 100 percent electric with zero emissions.

After the show, the Cars in Costume Parade will begin at 3:30 p.m., where any Ocean Lakes guests can dress up as well as decorate their golf cars to participate in the parade around the campground. All golf cars participating in the parade must obtain a registration sticker from the Golf Car Building.
