The KOA Campground in Durango, Colo., owned by Carol and Jay Coates, was selected Monday (Nov. 7) as the Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) 2012 Campground of the Year.

The award was presented during the opening day of KOA's annual convention at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Jay and Carol Coates have owned the Durango KOA for the past 20 years. During that time, they have worked tirelessly to make the Durango KOA one of the jewels of the Kampgrounds of America system of more than 475 campgrounds in North America, according to a news release.

The couple is also the former owners of the Estes Park, Colo., KOA Campground.

During their years with KOA, Jay and Carol Coates have been active in the system, taking a lead role in KOA's efforts to improve technology and communication with campers, as well as being leaders in several vital KOA programs.

Jay is a founding member of the KOA Green Team, which is developing environmentally sound policies and procedures for campgrounds through KOA's Kamp Green Program. He also serves on KOA's Marketing Partners Team, a group of 10 campground owners that act as marketing advisers for the KOA home office marketing staff.

Jay and Carol Coates were cited by KOA President Pat Hittmeier as perfect examples for new KOA campground owners.

"They are always supportive of the KOA system and our programs, and they are quick to help other owners in need," he said Monday. "They put the needs and desires of their camping guests first. They are perfect examples for other owners to follow."
