The family campground at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, located 15 miles north of Gettysburg, Pa., is closing earlier than expected for the season due to extensive damage from the weekend snowstorm, the Carlisle Sentinel reported.

The heavy snow broke tree limbs and brought trees to the ground, causing damage and blocking roadways and trails, Park Manager Jason Zimmerman said.

The campground that was originally scheduled to remain open through Dec. 10 had to close Monday (Oct. 31) and will remain closed until the opening of the 2012 season on March 30, Zimmerman said.

The Organized Group Tenting Area at Pine Grove Furnace is still open along with the campground at the nearby Colonel Denning State Park until Dec. 11.

Due to the widespread damage, many trails and roads are currently impassable and the park is without both electric and phone, Zimmerman said.
