From The Associated Press:
A wildfire burning in Cumberland Island’s federally protected wilderness didn’t stop a weekend event for wild hog and deer hunters off the Georgia coast.
National Park Service spokeswoman Maggie Tyler said rangers decided the 43-acre fire has been contained enough to allow the Sunday hunt to go forward as planned.
She didn’t know exactly how many hunters planned to participate but said it’s normally 40 or more.
Tyler said hunters got a special orientation to show them where the fire is located and what areas they won’t be allowed into. Two campgrounds on Cumberland Island have been closed since the fire was spotted Wednesday.
Rangers have surrounded the fire with control lines and hope it will burn itself out. Its footprint is less than 1/10th of a square mile.
